What is NaPoWriMo?

NaPoWriMo is National Poetry Writing Month, held every April, in which interested poets attempt to write a poem every day for 30 days, usually sparked by a prompt for the day.

This might seem like a challenge to those who don’t write poetry everyday, or who are not familiar with the literary conventions of how to approach writing poetry. But NaPoWriMo is a good exercise or a starting point for people who want to get into writing poetry. Here are some tips to help to get started:

#1 Keep a list of prompts ready, if you don’t find any which cater to your writing style.

A lot of poetry handles put out a list of prompts in the last week or March, or one each day. Usually there is a ton of interesting stuff to choose from, and these prompts stretch out your writing capabilities to an exciting limit. But if you find that writing prompts don’t really suit you, you can make a list of your prompts, but well beforehand. Poetry has no rules, and NaPoWriMo certainly shouldn’t be about enforcing those!

#2 Don’t think of it like a compulsory exercise.
