Is Print Media Dying?

Over the long-standing debate of books vs kindles, we’ve come to the overarching question: is the print industry dead? We discussed the present of the print industry and compared it to the digital media industry and got a little nostalgic too.

‘As long as you have a steady internet connection, you’re going to be fine. A lot of print media houses who were hesitant about having an online presence have turned over new leaves, investing a considerable amount of effort and time into it. One can read a book, newspaper, and a magazine anywhere and anytime.’

My friend quips in, ‘But smartphones, tabs and laptops are exorbitantly expensive. Does that restrict the access of digital media to people with such devices?’

‘Well, I don’t think they’re exorbitantly expensive, it really depends on the kind of devices you buy. Any normal device is capable of enabling you to read online articles and digital books perfectly! Plus, what do you have internet cafes, fundraisers, and rich relatives for?’

She just laughed. But she added, ‘Print is tangible, beautiful and easy to consume. It offers for sentimental value. There is a sensory pleasure involved in reading a book. And isn’t it aesthetically pleasing to feel a book in your hands?’

I was quick to respond. ‘In an e-book, users can not only turn pages but can also change…
