How to Create Your Characters?

The character is the soul of your story, shaping your plot and being shaped by it. A lot of stories are character-centric, and if you want to have a stellar story, you need to make sure that your characters are strongly crafted and fleshed out well. Here are some tips on how you can create your characters:

#1 Establish your character’s goals and motivations

Your character’s current motivation and goal is the reason for the story to exist. They both comprise what the character wants from the plot and what will take their journey forward. Good characters are created solely on the basis of their motivation for going forward in the story, for example, Harry Potter’s reason for finding Voldemort is to avenge his parents and to destroy the horcruxes which will guarantee his death. These motivations and goals may be internal and external, for example, his reason for finding Voldemort and killing him is to stop his rise as the Dark Lord (external), and to find closure for the death of his parents (internal).

#2 Choose a voice

Who is telling the story? Is it the character themselves or another person narrating their story? The voice that you choose to tell the story in matters because it will help you flesh out your characters in this way.
