So we’re finally here. You’re attempting NaNoWriMo for the first time. What you have in front of you is a humongous task: writing a draft of an entire novel within 30 days.
Planning is a huge part of it, of course, but come November, maintaining momentum is key. How does one do it?
We all hope to have the ease of just banging out exquisitely laden prose on a daily basis. Honestly, it’s the dream: the ability to just wake up at the crack of dawn and just…write. Sadly, writing is a torrid affair with some good days and many slower ones.
Writing seems to be a cultivated habit, one that requires discipline. It’s even more crucial for this project, which requires you to complete an entire manuscript in one go.
So what can you do?
#1: Figure out timings
In order to build discipline, planning is key. Understand your own writing patterns, and set aside a time of the day dedicated to writing. When the time comes, just write. Don’t worry about word count in the beginning; you may not achieve consistency numerically, but just keep writing. It allows you to build writing as a habit in the first place.
